Putting It All Together

A Sponsor

Like any other venture in your company, a web site will need a sponsor, i.e. somebody who is on the hook for the results, really cares about the results, and better yet, really likes the technology.  A sponsor may work alone, or lead a committee of people with a business interest in the web site.

You could skip caring about your site, hire a consultant, have a site built for you and never give it another thought. But I’m convinced this would be of very low value to you. The more time and imagination you invest, the more you will get back.

Vision

An important part of sponsorship is vision and mission.  Describe your goals, your site and how a customer finds and uses the site in a few sentences.  Why does the site exist? Who it is for?  How should it look and feel?

Without a well-articulated vision, no one can build a site to accomplish your goals.  Without a consistent vision, a site will confuse the user by changing so much from page to page that they wonder if they have left your site all together.

And make sure you know who makes the final decisions. You might have conflict between a web master taking wild ideas from all over the world and a CEO with more conservative notions. Think in advance about how you will deal with this.

See Far!

Don't sell your vision short.  You may be able to change the whole universe for your company, go national or global overnight, eliminate layers of distribution channels, invent new markets and products.
